Illustrations from Aesop's Fables
Baby's Own Aesop is a children's book illustrated by Walter Crane and published in 1887 by the firm of G. Routledge and Sons. The text is an adaptation in rhyme of the famous Aesop's Tales, written primarily by W.J. Linton, whom Crane refers to as his "friend and master" in the introduction.
Each page of the book is devoted to a short retelling of one of Aesop's Fables, with vivid and amusing illustrations by the artist. The book is dedicated by Crane to the "possessors of the Baby's Opera and the Baby's Bouquet", two other books illustrated by the artist.
In total there are about 54 illustrations, most of which are in colour. The text is not type set but instead written in decorative letters, and forms an integral part of the illustrations.
It is a charming book and an excellent adaptation of Aesop's Fables, though the concepts and language do seem too advanced to read to a baby.
