This is a set of 42 illustrations from a book by Walter Crane called Queen Summer, subtitled The Journey of the Lily and the Rose. The drawings have much in common with other works by Crane which feature anthropomorhic flowers and garden fairies, subjects which were very much in vogue during the Victorian era.
Here Crane tells the story of beautiful damsels and brave knights, who personify the essence of spirits of the garden flowers. The charm of these simple yet elegant drawings, reminiscent of medieval illuminated manuscripts, transcends the fairly cliched story.
